Following its bulletins of 5 May 2021 updating the New Industrial Strategy proposed in 2020, the European Commission has additional indicated that it’s going to rely quite closely on industry to ship on the main challenges confronted by our economies and societies in Europe. This is particularly the case in relation to sustainability, digital transformation, and global competitiveness, in addition to the need to overcome the crisis provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU Recovery and Resilience Plan launched in Spring 2021 is essentially constructing on the aptitude of European business to design and produce the constructing blocks of the twin green and digital transition. At the same time, the EU is shaping a dense regulatory framework that doesn’t at all times assist the freedom and adaptability wanted for corporations to grow and compete globally.
The European technology industries, and in particular our pumps, compressors, taps and valves sectors, have for a long time considered the enhancement of their world competitiveness throughout the challenges of societal and environmental challenges, notably by contributing to the preparation of vitality effectivity and ecolabel regulations. In parallel, digitalisation has provided elevated alternatives and brought new challenges, together with debates on the appropriate regulatory degree (sharing of commercial information, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, etc).
These developments, amidst ever extra fierce worldwide competitors, require that public authorities and trade within the EU work more and more extra closely to design and deploy methods that reinforce our competitiveness and our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This will be the topic of the initial debate kicking off our Joint EU Policy Conference, which is ready to deliver together key coverage makers from the three EU coverage establishments in control of the Industrial Strategy and three Executives representing and illustrating the achievements enjoyed, and challenges still confronted, by these three key sectors of business.
Specific Technical and Policy Issues

As the regulatory landscape across Europe, and indeed the entire world, becomes ever extra advanced, the burden on industry solely increases. It subsequently falls to sector particular trade organisations, similar to Europump, CEIR and Pneurop, to determine and advise on these technical and coverage issues most relevant to their respective sectors. In our explicit enviornment, that relates, in fact, to the manufacture, distribution and use of pumps and all pump associated tools – an enormous and necessary subset of industry, given the width and breadth of pump purposes.
Against this backdrop, one of many major concerns when figuring out the core themes for the joint conference was to maintain a direct reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Within this focus, the three associations intend to spotlight how, together with the importance for firms to address technical features impacting their every day business operations, they consider the positive role of industry in addressing societal challenges. Indeed, all the periods could have a technical theme matching the most acceptable UN SDG, and with illustration from the European Commission together with technical consultants from business and/or analysis institutes, they’ll every be reflective of the current legislative terrain, because it pertains to pumps and pumping systems in the following key areas:
Circular Economy & Eco-design (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)

Industry’s Digital Transformation and Innovation (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)

The restriction of use of supplies and substances of concern (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)

The regulatory and legislative panorama throughout Europe is becoming more and more complex, and trade, in all its guises, needs to be conscious and prepared for what is coming.
